Workshop 1: 4th International Web Archiving Workshop - 8 West Level 2 Room 2.30

Workshop chairs:

Julien Masanes, Bibliothèque Nationale de France
Andreas Rauber, Vienna University of Technology, Austria

This will be the fourth International Workshop on Web Archiving. The workshop will provide a cross-domain overview on active research and practice in the emergent domain of web archiving and studies on effective usage of this type of archives.

It is also intended to provide a forum for interaction among librarians, archivists, academic and industrial researchers interested in establishing effective methods and developing improved solutions for Web archiving, maintaining the material accessible.

Workshop 2: User-centred approaches to Networked Knowledge Organization Systems/Services (NKOS) - 8 West Level 2 Room 2.23

Workshop chairs:

Marianne Lykke, Department of Information Studies, Royal School of Library and Information Science, Denmark
Douglas Tudhope, School of Computing, University of Glamorgan, Wales, UK
Anna Gjerluf, Eslau Regulatory Central Archive, H. Lundbeck A/S, Denmark

The objective of the NKOS Workshop is to facilitate the exchange of viewpoints and ideas about topics and problems related to the development and design of NKOS. The issues discussed may range from considerations related to the role of KOS, conceptual content and design, methodological issues, and technical issues (protocols and XML-RDF technologies). This is the 3rd European NKOS Workshop - for details of the previous workshops and the seven US Workshops see the NKOS web site

Workshop 3: 2nd HDL 2004: Workshop on Digital Libraries in Healthcare
8 West Level 2 Room 2.28

Patty Kostova, City ehealth Research Centre, Institute of Health Sciences, City University, UK
Anne Adams, UCL Interaction Centre, UCL, UK

The objective of the 2nd HDL workshop is to provide an informal forum for researchers from academia, industry and health care institutions to present their work on digital libraries in healthcare, share their experience and discuss mutual technical and user-centred interests in order to bridge the gap between academic research and industrial and real-world project needs. An impact evaluation of digital libraries in real-world settings is an essential part of DL research that can answer the fundamental question: Do healthcare DLs make any difference to clinical practise and patient care?

Academic researchers can often provide technically brilliant solutions to theoretical problems with no applicability to the real-world systems. Real-world health care project decision makers are not involved in cutting-edge research to see how new inventions could serve the needs of real projects. User-centred research should bridge this gap but the application of this within the healthcare domain has been limited. This workshop is aiming to bridge this gap by providing digital library researchers an opportunity to discuss and collaborate with colleagues working on real-world healthcare projects. In particular, it will focus on information management in health-care digital libraries, health care information provision on the Internet, searching and Web crawling, personalization aspects and end-user evaluation and needs for information in digital libraries.

The presentations are not expected to be directly related to existing healthcare applications but should address technical or implementation issues that need to be solved in real health care systems. By attracting researchers and decision makers from academia, industry and health care institutions, this workshop will be a unique event providing a forum for sharing both technical user-centred interests enabling post-workshop collaboration.

HDL 2003: the 1st HDL Workshop was held in conjunction with the ECDL 2003 conference in Trondheim, Norway in August 2003.

Workshop 4 : CLEF 2004 - Workshop of the Cross-Language Evaluation Forum
(Runs from Wednesday 15th September until Friday 17th September)

Room - Lecture Theatre 5 West Level 2

Workshop Chair: Carol Peters - Italian National Research Council, Pisa

The Cross-Language Evaluation Forum (CLEF) supports global digital library applications by (i) organising a series of annual evaluation campaigns to test information retrieval systems operating on European languages in both monolingual and cross-language contexts, and (ii) creating test-suites of reusable data which can be employed by system developers for benchmarking purposes. The aim of the Workshop will be to present and discuss the results of the CLEF 2004 evaluation campaign and allow researchers and developers to compare performance between systems using different approaches and strategies. Please note that attendance at the Workshop is on invitation only and is mainly limited to participants in the CLEF Evaluation Campaigns. If you would like to attend the workshop and have not been invited you must contact Carol Peters before registering. For more information, see the Workshop website
